organizing my desk with knock knock!

Once a year, I treat myself to a Knock Knock Pad - Two years ago, it was a Pro-Con list. Last year, it was a to-do list. This year, it's the Five Days a Week Keyboard Pad. Knock Knock sent me this awesome long pad that serves as a to-do list and weekly planner. This is a space saver, and rests at the base of your keyboard.

I tested it out at work and love how its 15" size aligns with my laptop. It is a colorful accent to my work space! The 5-day + weekend format makes the week seem do-able and visually spaced out.  I am sure that these pages will be increasingly full over the next few days, but I love the little countdowns at the bottom corners. "Can You Taste It?" is my favorite!! Checking those off will be so satisfying throughout the year...

The weekend pad consists of separate weekend sticky notes that are especially fun. It makes looking forward to the weekend even more fun for a stationery lover like myself!

It is definitely more useful in a work or office setting, because it actually gets use. My desk at home is more for personal stuff - blogging, pinterest-ing, and general reading. I really do enjoy using it at work, and have received compliments on it from like-minded people who love a good writing surface. I discovered that Knock Knock also makes a mousepad with a similar format, which will probably be my next purchase when this keyboard pad runs out.

Til then, it's a pretty nice rest for the wrists when typing. If you're in love with Knock Knock as much as me, then sign up for their e-newsletter!! New signups get 20% off your purchase of $50!

Thanks Knock Knock! Can't wait to see what you come out with next!

ciao, xo

bag envy

one // two // three // four // five

When the anticipation of fall starts buzzing around I automatically think: time for a new bag. Is this realistic? No. But I can dream!! I got a bright orange structured tote last fall and I am loving the pop of color it brights to my outfits. I have a philosophy around accessories, based on my own style preferences -  because I usually tend to wear neutral clothes, I love a punchy and bright accessory. For instance, I would never wear pants or a sweater in that yellow shade (3) but in a bag I think its a little unexpected and stylish. Same goes for scarfs, shoes, you name it.

To contradict myself, I have also recently become smitten with that romantic blush shade - the slightest pink - to complement my love for neutrals. It is definitely more feminine, but I looveeee that look!! Of course most of these are out of my budget, but it is simple to find lookalikes for a much more reasonable price. Backpack 4 would be perfect for grad school, or even now being in California and always riding my bike (bikes and backpacks just go so well together). These kind of pieces are investment pieces, purchases to be spread out over time...but I am thinking about taking the plunge!!

Finally, bag 5 is actually a bag meant solely for cameras. It is a beautifully constructed messenger bag that can fit a camera body and 1-2 additional lenses! (Where is the heart eyes emoji?) I have been thinking about doing a DIY where I re-outfit an old bag into a camera lens bag, but this is definitely superior to anything I could make.

How about you - what are your dream bags of the moment? Which one, #1-5, do you like the best?

five things i love about countryside living

It isn't often that I take time to appreciate the countryside. Its qualities are things I notice only when they aren’t present - like when I’m wandering around the city, stuck in traffic, or smelling stinky city smells.  But to contradict myself, I am noticing the beauties of the countryside and appreciating it more and more. It often happens when it is screaming at me in the face - through a color-splashed sunset, or an unmanned "leave $5 in the mailbox" fresh flower stand at the end of someone's drive. It's incredibly hard to narrow down the things I love about country living, but I have chosen what means most to me. At a time when most people my age are living their lives in sky-high apartments or spending weekends at IKEA for city dwelling furnishing, I am holding true to my countryside roots!

The phrase 'farm to table' is, I think, a phrase born from the city; because here in the countryside that's just how food is expected to be: from the farm. I think it took me time to actually appreciate this, because I definitely took it for granted when I was younger. There is just the right balance of farmers markets, grocery stores, and farm stands in my area. Each place is a go-to for its own reason. It makes it easy - especially in the warmer, in-season months - to cook and come up with creative and healthy dishes.

Fresh grown herbs and a diverse gamut of spices is something I depend on daily when I am cooking. Vegetables and fruits during the growing season are another staple, especially for dinners or smoothie making.

I really do appreciate my morning commute as a time to think. My morning commute has long stretches of open road; horse farms; foggy fields; sunrises and the occasional deer. I don't take it for granted - even if I am driving to work. There is rarely any traffic (usually I get stuck behind a school bus) and the road is wide, surrounded by green trees and pretty views of open land. Last year I even got to drive over a covered bridge every day - a rarity, even around here!

Even better than commuting? Weekend drives.

Something about a small, store-front lined street with lamp posts and cobblestones appeals to me. I love all of the little spots near and far from home; although each one is a short drive, they are always worth a look. I'm still finding new things every time I go. I think my #1 favorite this year goes to Princeton - I love everything about that place and would love to live there someday.

In a typical main street town you can almost always find bits of the city: i.e. a Starbucks, maybe parking meters, a couple of name brand stores, and historical buildings. What makes them different is the mom and pop stores, the farm stands, the fresh flowers that are laid out in window boxes and pots out side of store fronts and doors. Little cafes and lunch counters. Ice cream shops and eclectic tarot card readers. Historic hotels-turned-restaurants and Revolutionary War era inns (hey, George Washington "slept" here!).

Summer nights (or spring, or fall - not so much winter) are meant to be spent outdoors. My mom's garden is an entertainer's eden - it begins on the deck and spills out into the surrounding corners of the property. It is adorned with fairy lights and citronella torches and candles. In the purple twilight of a summer evening, the illumination is just so lovely. I love how isolated and tucked away a gathering can feel at home - we are in our own little world and the rest of civilization feels like miles away!

You can't really capture this in a city, unless you're on someone's rooftop. While that has its certain edginess to it, I'd take a garden party any day. We often round out the night with music, a bonfire for s'mores, and a tray of tea and coffees to accompany dessert. We've had everything from going away parties, graduations, tea parties, surprise birthdays, to family reunions.

I also love being in a place where nature - although routine for my eyes - is everywhere.   Birds, flowers, deer, full moons, hilly fields, creeks and rivers, foliage, and the soft wind. I can take a walk or drive and stretch my eyes nice and far. I hear birds chirping in the spring mornings and owls hooting during dark winter nights. I can look outside my window and see every shade of green possible. There are dozens of horse farms less than a mile away. The stars at night are bright and clear - nothing is obstructing their brightness. Barns are plentiful. Hills in the distance are winding and blue. There are lots of hidden drives and creeks and bridges. I could never, ever, ever tire of the flowers - wild or not.

what do you love about your neck of the woods!?

a happy list

Some things that are getting me through these very busy weeks (and also making me very happy):
  • eating chocolate licorice (a weird new favorite/craving that came out of nowhere)
  • re-runs of the office on netflix
  • seeing the magnolias and cherry blossoms rain pink petals in a spring breeze
  • being tan somehow already (??)
  • sunlight at 8:00 in the evening
  • homemade penne arrabiata
  • the summertime urge to be outside and spontaneous
  • fajitas, fajitas, fajitas
  • margaritas, margaritas, margaritas
  • everything outside green
  • shell tank tops from loft
  • on-the-whim weekends (like this DC weekend, pictured above)
  • new leather sandals ready to be broken in
  • windows down on the way home from work
  • iced coffees :)
Being halfway through May is kinda nice...there's a lot to look forward to and I am finally feeling like summer is attainable!

spring's a comin'!

1. Street Level reversible tote \\ 2. Tieks \\ 3. j.Crew firefly earrings \\ 4. Anthro tee \\ 5. lime wallet \\ 6. lululemon shiny leggings \\ 7. t3 travel dryer \\ 8. Benefit FakeUp \\ 9. Anthro makeup bag

When you're getting ready to travel somewhere it's always fun to pick up a few treats to make the journey even sweeter! These are currently the items that I want and/or can't get enough of...and they are definitely what I want to be packing for CA in a few short weeks!

1. Street Level reversible tote. I own this beauty and love the versatility of the thin, b&w faux leather. It is super light but can hold stuff like a bucket! Wish it had more pockets, but for easy coming and going, it pretty much goes with anything.

2. Tieks. I don't own Tieks but have seen them pop up all over my Facebook and other ads, which has sparked my curiosity because they look so darn comfortable and so fitting for travel. These remind me of Gap's city flats which fold up and come with a little baggy. The pastel shades are pretty - this ballerina pink couldn't get any more girlie. They come in pretty much every color under the sun...

3. J. Crew earrings. I lost a pair of loud rhinestone earrings not unlike these while out one night this winter...heartbroken! These are kind of like my old ones, and I am in need of a 'going out' replacement. Adds such a good amount of sparkle under my thick hair.

4. Anthro tee. Obseeeesssed with this shirt! I own it in this gorgeous light heathered grey. It is SO light and drapey. It's not ideal for cold days, but I love the ethereal look of it (even with leggings or jeans!). It is super long in the back too, so it can be worn as a tunic. The v-neck in the front is repeated in the back. Cool details, simple design. Love it and will definitely bring it to CA!

5. Lime wallet. My mom always told me growing up that a lady should have a bright wallet. Why? Because if you're looking in the depths of your bag...you should be looking for something that pops out, not blends in! I need a new wallet desperately but want one that I really love - this Tory Burch wallet is WAY out of my price range but I love the shape and color.

6. Lululemon Shine leggings. I own a pair of these and wish I could order 3,000 more. They are THE BEST. Currently sold out online, I've been unable to find another pair. I can't imagine my weekend without them, put it that way. They are comfortable, slimming, even appropriate for drinks or dinner. I love the high waist fit.

7. t3 travel dryer. There is still research to be done on these travel dryers, but I have heard really good things about this brand. Travel dryers - especially dual-voltage international hairdryers - have a tendency to break, fizzle out, blow up (ha) with me...I put hairdryers to work. I always buy high wattage and can't seem to find out how much power this t3 packs. Jury's out on this one.

8. Benefit Fake Up. Best. concealer. ever. I am already on my second tube of this miracle stuff. I am not big into concealer, but this serves as a highlighter as well as a cover up. I sampled it first in a birchbox last year - I would definitely figure out your shade before purchasing the whole tube (although it's about $25).

9. Anthro calf hair makeup bag. This makeup bag is so cute. I've realized that I've gotten by in the makeup-bag department by using freebies from Clinique or Estee Lauder - bags where the zippers frequently break, or loose eyeshadow unfortunately explodes whilst traveling - ugh. So I've been hesitant to splurge on a new go-to makeup bag (especially with a tough exterior! calf hair!?) but hey, a girl can dream.

february goals

Can you believe February is almost here?! Already into chapter 2 of 2015...amazing. I am looking forward to a lot this month, including a lot of health goals I am setting for myself. This winter I am finding (much to my liking!) that I have a lot of me time. I am being responsible with balancing work and being 'productive,' plus a few fun things here and there. January was great - lots of yoga, spending smart, the Downton premiere, a day trip, plus some new interior changes which have felt like a breath of fresh air!

february goals

  • top priority: running 3x a week and other small workouts in between, including vinyasa classes and maybe barre. I am almost ashamed of how relaxed I have been when it comes to working out. If I were to get together with myself now and a me back from September, the September-me would disapprove of my hiatus from running. SO - in the spirit of starting fresh, April & Mary and I (two blog friends from years back!) are going to be cheering each other on as we work on our personal health goals.
  • Devote more time branching out with blogging. I want to get in touch with so many new or recent bloggers I've discovered - gotta get the emails rollin!
  • Shoot a few more wintry-themed style posts while I can! I'll aim for 3-4 more between February and March. Expect one very soon, actually!
  • Save $$. I am in the process of planning a trip in April and I want to save up, keeping this big trip in mind. I want to limit purchases to cash...when possible.
  • Stick to the skin routine. I have posted about it before, and I still feel a little self conscious about this - but my skin went through a lot in 2014! I have been SO happy and comfortable "in my own skin," not to be cliche. But I am. I have established a much better and healthier routine to help this, and I want to keep it up.
  • Limit the take out and ordering out for dinner to once a week. I have gotten better in January about making dinners at home. HOWEVER, I usually just fall back on the easiest and most delicious thing I can make: pasta. Penne with pesto, chicken noodle soup, gnocchi...sigh. It is all so delicious (see next bullet*). I want to be a little more creative in the cooking department, without spending too much money and definitely without relying on take out like I have done in the past. Some ideas I have in mind already: chicken fajitas, breakfast for dinner, spinach soup, salads (ugh) and maaaaaybe even veggie bowls, I don't know. I just need to back off the pasta.
  • Pasta only 1x per week. Deal with it. Plan accordingly.*

what are some goals you're setting yourself for February!?
Ciao e buon Febbraio!! xo

cozy weekend in

^ like my holey sweater? :)

current obsessions:
  • chips and salsa.
  • my new heated mattress pad!
  • keeping my room straightened up and organized.
  • vanilla bean ice cream {and pretzels.}
  • my swell bottle
  • george harrison music every weekend morning!
  • lavender candles
  • roaring fireplace fires
  • pollo piccata
  • season 5 downton sundays :)
  • interior decorating dreams
  • basil pesto.
  • praying for a huge snow dump. eee!
  • amazon prime
  • my {new} smart tv!!

This weekend was the coziest! From Saturday's post, you can tell it was a pretty snowy and indoorsy day. It called for heather grey sweats, decadent hot chocolate, and listening to george harrison tunes - which I am so into these days thanks to a CD my sister gave me. I was actually quite productive for this otherwise lazy-sounding day; I shot a new post for valentines' day (coming soon!), organized my room and prepped for the upcoming paint job, and even found time to break out the watercolors for a little painting sesh.

How was your weekend?

what do you do when all you want is grey?

I recently promised myself I would stick to this 30-day challenge to 'use your wardrobe' (aka no new clothes shopping). I've tested my discipline by doing a little browsing...and I am finding that all I want are neutrals (especially greys!). I really want them allllll - some for work, some for weekend. I think the grey fits my wintry sort of mood - and in the summer it will be a total reversal. Spending my morning on pinterest and all these websites was probably not the best idea!

How was everyone's weekend? For me it was lots of naps, laying low, and last night a fantastic episode of Downton..anyone else watching? Have a lovely week and happy MLK day!

Ciao, xo

current (and forever) beauty favorites

I am really excited about this selection of beauty faves because it's not just current - I feel like I've struck gold and these will be longtime go-to choices. That being said, it is quite an opulent selection - rich Chanel lipsticks, La Mer, skinny gel eyeliners. Combined, these would make up the ultimate gilded look, something really glitzy and festive for a special occasion - not everyday. I think a little touch of red for a random workday doesn't hurt, but layering all of this on does make for a particularly glamorous look. Alright... I am done talking about toning this makeup down! I am so excited, like I said, because I am totally 100% in love with each and every product; I feel really confident on how to wear them.

Foundation I have spent the better part of the last year finding out which moisturizers work for me and what doesn't - I've never thought about it before but it may have been the cause of some minor issues like oily skin and breakouts. So I ditched anything I doubted altogether (which was hard to do). I tried a few samples of Creme de la Mer and of course, it's absolutely divine. It leaves skin light and succulent and nourished. However the price tag is definitely an inhibitor, so I rarely (and I mean rarely) use this before dabbing on my favorite Visible Lift Blur (or as I just call it, "blur") foundation by L'Oreal. To apply, I use one of those awesome foamy tools that cost $5 or so at any beauty store. Then comes the bronzer. I picked out this Bare Essentials bronzer - a perennial favorite - during a complimentary Sephora makeover, which I highly recommend if you're doing a total beauty overhaul.  I really think the unsung hero with my bronzer is the brush, actually. I bought this super-soft brush (not sure if it is a true kabuki brush) solely for my bronzer, and I love it.

Lips The investment pieces are obviously a little pricier; Chanel lipstick is not something I plan to start collecting but man is it fun to have a little stash going! I have two shades, but my more recent acquirement is La Fascinate - a super 'old hollywood' bold red. This is something I'll definitely be reserving for nights out and 'fancier' occasions. My everyday pick is Bonheur, which unfortunately doesn't "last" as long on, but has a beautiful plum tone to it along with a light shimmer to awaken the color.

Eyes For everyday, I use the Revlon and Almay skinny liners (I used to be horrible at applying, but practice makes perfect). Both are great for layering atop the other, since one is jet-black and the other is a pretty gem-tone purple. I don't normally use either on the lower-lids, but the Almay is actually perfect for smudging and creating a jewell-y dimension. I find that I love this amethyst color (and also a jade green) for my eyes. Do some messing around and you can find a rich gem tone that complements you eyes, too. :) I also just received a waterproof Chanel eye pencil in ebene (black) which is really fun for drawing dramatic, bold lines that won't budge. Last but not least - and probably my desert island product - is mascara. For me, I've always gravitated to L'Oreal, anything high-volume.

This post has made me feel like a beauty editor. New dream job?

2015 wanderlust

I am sitting here sipping a coffee and making myself swear to go to one of these places this year. I believe the Dalai Lama is known for these instructions: Once a year, go someplace you've never been before. I, so far, have lived by that quote for a few years now! Starting in 2008 (on and off) I have been to plenty a new place, and I am blessed. First - Italy. Then back to Italy in 2011. Then, in 2013, a slew of new countries including France, Monaco and Croatia (and - you guessed it - Italy!). Last year I got to know more of the USA when S moved to California. And for 2015?! Who knows! But these places are looking very attractive indeed, for several reasons. Who's with me?
photos via here // original sources cannon beach // bondi beach // okinawa // yorkshire // south africa

I am blessed that I have free time in the summer to travel! So I am really thinking hard. Unfortunately the summer is the busiest, and most expensive time to travel anywhere, it seems. But if I start saving small, and do it right and with discipline, it is doable! And planning is required of course. Some of the places above are similar (hello, beaches!) but I also have such an interest in England lately. Then South Africa (random, right?). Some are much more realistic than others. I just want to see it all while I can and while I'm young!

Where are you planning on going this year?
ciao, xo

12/13/14

please send this along to santa

Last week I posted gifts for friends and family, and today I am posting some items I myself am hoping for. Some I already purchased myself - is that okay? Anyway, I have a few things that I have been wanting for a while - but above items, I really want to regain the strides I made in running this year (and have since stopped :( ugh) by joining a gym to beat the cold. Beeeeesides that...I am hoping for some makeup. I'm finally buying grown-up makeup and loving the difference (there is a difference). I use drugstore stuff all the time, but slowly I am adding little splurge items. Next are some accessories: black suede boots and a black felt hat (I've had my eye on for a while!).  I also am in desperate need of a new wallet, hopefully one of a punchy color so that I can find it inside a bag (that's a trick my mom always told me to follow). Kate Spade wallets are exactly that punch of bright, and big enough without being clunky. Lastly, some sweaters, fuzzy socks, and cozy clothes are always something I add to my list. LOFT has some great choices right now, which I'll list below. I also want some date time with S and my friends (preferably over coffee or a dinner table somewhere). :)

1. Kate Spade Wallet - brights, please!
2. Ray Ban Aviators - a classic; I love the look but could never decide whether I wanted the lenses to be really dark, almost opaque - or a sheer brownish. I think I'm going with the black (for winter at least!)
3. Coffee dates galore with the people I love! - (see my coffee diaries series for some of my favorite local cafes)
4. Adrienne Vittadini boot - I love how high the boot hits the knee, and the suede adds a nice finish...not sure about the chunky heel, but I remember trying these on and loving them.
5. A floppy black hat like this one from Urban...
6. LOFT has the best sweaters out now! I am obseeeessed with cowl necks...like this one.
7. Chanel makeup - which I feel sort of guilty about because it is just so indulgent - but it is such amazing quality. I loved the waterproof eye pencil which I tried at a trial and also the rich, poppy-hued rouge allure velvet lipstick. Absolutely obsessed!

what is on your list? ciao, xoooo!

{cold} style inspo

a few thoughts that popped in my head when I grabbed these inspo photos off of my pinterest:

1. Cowl Necks.
The ultimate must-have (in my book at least). So cozy,
pretty much always flattering, not as bulky or awkward as regular turtlenecks.

2. Jeans or leggings?
Realistically there is only one pair of jeans now in my 'rotation,'
and the rest are leggings. Pair it with a boot, done.

3. I want a white olivia pope-ish coat.

4. same thing goes for a floppy wide brim black hat

5. Let it be known that dressing for the cold is not my favorite.
Long live the summer.
But these looks do kinda give me a little hope for what's ahead.

ciao! xo
